The Bullock Texas State History Museum is a history museum found on 1800 North Congress Avenue, a few blocks north of the Texas State Capitol building. The museum is named after Bob Bullock, the 38th Lieutenant Governor of Texas, who was a driving force behind the creation of the museum and a strong champion for the preservation of Texas history.
On the first floor of the museum, you will find an large exhibit of Texas history and prehistory that starts over 16,000 years ago. The oldest artifact in this exhibition is a projectile point found at the Gault archaeological site some 40 miles north of Austin, and this item is one of the oldest known objects created by humand in the Americas. (In archaeology, a “projectile point” is an object that was hafted to a weapon capable of being thrown or projected, such as an arrow, dart or javelin.) The exhibition showcases the various early Native American peoples that lived in Texas, the arrival of Europeans, and the various regional and global forces that have influenced the growth of Texas during the last few centuries.
On the third floor are more specialized exhibits concering subjects such as Texas ranching, the oil industry, space exploration, Texas sports, music history in Texas, and the Texas civil rights movement.
